Fort Bowie NHS, Casa Grande Ruins NM

December 2016

Fort Bowie National Historic Site, also in Arizona, is one of those places few even know exists. Once you discover it’s out there you really have to want to see it to go there! It’s remote and difficult to get to.
Totally worth the challenging drive though, especially if you’re a history buff!
When we walked into the Visitor Center the ranger was positively thrilled to see us. It was late in the day and the center would be closing soon but we were the first visitors all day. He was eager to share his knowledge of the site and we were willing listeners.
If you can, zoom in on the pictures of the signs and read the interesting history.

What was left of the fort!

It says: Cochise, Chiricahua Apache Chief. Born approximately 1810 – Died 1874.
No photographs of this important Chief are known to exist today, but this portrait is believed to have been painted from a photograph in 1872.
The close of another exciting day of exploring.

Casa Grande Ruins National Monument was one of those surprise places for us. On the way to Apache Junction, AZ just outside a little town called Coolidge is a spectacular structure built by the Hohokam 700 years ago! No one is completely sure what the structure was used for but the best guess is for celestial viewing. Two small windows in the structure mark solar events and one marks a lunar event that happens only once every 18.6 years! Another definite must see Arizona site!

Dedication to my hero, Stephen Mather

I should have had Larry stand next to it to show how massive the place is!
The glare made it difficult to see the shot so some got cut off but you can read most of it.

 A fascinating read!

There’s also something called Hohokam Pima National Monument that we had hoped to visit. It’s an ancient burial site of the Ancient Hohokam People. It’s actually managed by modern day Native People. Because of the sacredness of the place they have chosen to keep it off limits. As much as I wanted to see it I completely understand and respect their right to do so. Too many sacred places have been ruined by people who have no respect for the believes of others!

About Me

My photo
Larry and I decided to retire and hit the road. We bought a new 5th Wheel and new truck to pull it. We packed up the dogs and we're heading out to check off that bucket list. We wake up every morning and "Thank Our Lucky Stars" that we get to do this.
