We knew we wanted to see Carlsbad Cavern National Park in
New Mexico but a wonderful find we weren’t expecting was Guadalupe Mountains National
Park in Texas on the way to Carlsbad. The “RV Park” is a first come first
served parking lot. No hook-ups, no dump station, but you can fill your water
tanks at their little spigot. I wouldn’t recommend it in the summer but it was
pretty awesome in early spring.
They mark the spaces for you. That's about it. |
We met a guy who set up a couple of telescopes
next to his rig. He let anyone who wanted do a little stargazing! He was
very knowledgeable. His spot became THE hangout place at night, very cool!
Guadalupe Peak is the parks feature attraction. It’s the
highest peak in Texas. We admired it from afar, while some younger more
adventurous types hiked it.
We did hike the Pinery Trail. A short flat hike
that took us to Old Pinery Station which was once a stop along the Butterfield Overland Mail
Route. It was kind of hot that day. So a mile and a half was enough for us and
the dogs.
One of my personal heroes! His obsession became my obsession! He helped create them, I'm going to visit them all! |
He always starts off with so much energy! |
The Geological makeup of Guadalupe is squished sponges! |
If
you’re near El Paso I highly recommend visiting Guadalupe Mountains National Park!
