May 2017
We try to keep our
travel days under 150 miles. Some days we have no choice but to go 200 miles. Because
our reservations were cancelled and we couldn’t find a new park close by, we
traveled over 300 miles to get to our next destination! Some people zip down
the highway with a trailer attached going 75-plus miles an hour. We’re not the
Fast and Furious type! We try to keep it at 65, less if it’s a particularly
rough road. Stella is our home and we’d like to keep her in good shape for a
while! Bouncing around at breakneck speeds isn’t going to accomplish that!
Between the moderate speed and the frequent stops this meant a 7 to 8 hour
travel day! I understand how that’s difficult for the driver but I have yet to
figure out how sitting in a truck, taking occasional naps is so exhausting for
the passenger.
Take my word for it,
it’s grueling!
We left the lush and
green Pacific Northwest and headed for barren (comparatively) central
Washington. After what seemed like a very long day Gypsy, our GPS (hey I named
my truck and 5th wheel didn’t I) announced “Ten miles to your
destination on the right.” We were in the middle of a farmer’s field! At first
I thought the RV Park would be one of those places with a few spots on some guy’s
land. We’ve stayed at those! Then I remembered the pictures! Their website
showed a resort type place, spacious with large trees, level pads, lots of
grass, a pool and clubhouse! We’ve stayed in parks where they exaggerated the
looks of the place on line before but if this place WAS in a farmer’s field it
was out and out fraud!
Gypsy kept telling us
we were almost there and we kept driving through the same field! Finally she
said, “You have reached your destination,”
We looked at each
other! We looked at the field that went on for miles!
“Okay, sometimes
she’s a bit off. Let’s just keep driving until we see something.” I reasoned.
We drove! We drove
some more! Still nothing but crops on either side of us!
We were both starting
to get a bit concerned!
We reached the summit
of a small hill and could see something in the distance!
“That’s gotta be it!” Larry said.
“That’s gotta be it!” Larry said.
We reached a little
building of sorts. It wasn’t it!
“I’m turning around.”
“NO!” I said, “We
know what’s behind us! A whole lot of nothing! Let’s just keep going.”
We drove a bit more
and were relieved to see a sign in the distance!
O’Sullivan Sportsman Resort
Gypsy was almost 10
miles off! That had never happened!
We checked in,
collected the mail we’d had sent there and relaxed. The next day was my
birthday so we planned on a little sightseeing and dinner at a local restaurant.
The next morning was hot, something we weren’t used to that so we decided
against the sightseeing. We just kind of hung out until dinnertime. I started
to look for someplace to eat and discovered most of the eating establishments
in the area were closed on Mondays! It was Monday! I was determined! I finally
found something that was open until 7:30. It was about 6:30. I wrote down the
address to plug it into Gypsy.
Larry said, “I don’t think that’s too far from here.”
Larry said, “I don’t think that’s too far from here.”
We got in and
followed her directions. She said to go left on the highway. We went left. We
drove and drove and drove! Right about where she said, “You’ve reached your
destination.” Was the same place she said “You’ve reached your destination” for
the RV Park!
We looked at each
other again. And looked at the same farmer’s field. We drove back to the RV
Park and saw a sign for the restaurant about 200 yards right of the entrance!
We made it in time for dinner… just barely! Had a nice meal, went for a
drive and saw possibly the most beautiful sunset I've ever seen!
This is where Gypsy said, "You have reached your destination."
No filters or anything! This really was the color of the sunset!
You can't tell from this picture but the lake was called Potholes because there were a whole bunch of holes on the other side of the road that were also filled up with water. The best place to see it was on a bridge that you couldn't stop on so... no pictures!
All and all it was a
pretty nice birthday: a little frustrating but we had a good laugh and a
beautiful sunset!
