September 2017
I’ve been trying to
get Larry to take me to Homestead National Monument in Beatrice, NE for 10
years. It’s kind of out of the way from our usual stop in NE but we finally
went.
It was our 103rd National Park Service Site!

They had a big to-do
there for the eclipse. It’s not one of the more visited NPS sites but on August
21, 2017 there were thousands there! We stayed away from that. But it was a
really awesome place. We were wondering why they choose Beatrice for the site.
It’s in the southeast part of the state, almost to the Kansas border. It’s one
of those places you really have to want to see to get there because there’s not
much else around and it’s not really on a major route.
We found out the
first person to file a homestead claim under the new homestead act of 1862 was Daniel
Freeman and this was his claim. They have Daniel’s home, the original
schoolhouse, a visitor center and an educational center. I thought it was worth
the trip.
Plus it’s harvest time in NE so I got to see some of those awesome machines that harvest the crops in action along the way.
