Day 2! When Things Go Pop!

I wrote this on May 12th, but it happened on December 27, 2015

What an adventure!

It's so beautiful!
But when it's stupid below zero...you can keep it!
We got up early, grabbed a breakfast sandwich and coffee, said goodbye to Cedar City, UT and headed for Wyoming. We were hoping to make it at least as far as Rawlins.

It was cold and clear but the truck was warm and the puppies were cozy in their little car seats. We made a few pit stops along the way. Wyoming has those cool rest stops that utilize architecture to heat and cool them. I was telling Larry how I learned about that type of architecture in a class I had taken a few years back. They were cold inside but not too bad if you're making a quick stop. We had lunch in Rock Springs, WY and headed out again. A short time later we were approaching another roadside rest stop discussing if it was too soon to stop. POP! We heard a noise, both of us felt something and the engine shut off! Decision made. Luckily we coasted into the rest stop and found a place to park. We sat there for a moment and stared at each other. Larry asked if I had any bars on my phone then remembered the OnStar button.

A nice young lady's voice came over the speakers and said, "This is (can't remember her name) with OnStar. How may I help you today?"

We explained what had happened and told her we were going to need a tow truck that could take us, our 2 little dachshunds and the truck, we were hoping to Rawlins, WY to get it looked at and spend the night. She asked us to hold on while she made a call then came back and told us the best she could do was have someone take us back to Rock Springs and she wasn't sure if the tow truck that would take the truck could also take us, but not to worry if that truck couldn't accommodate us and the dogs they'd send someone else along soon.

Um...wait...it's eleven degrees BELOW zero out! "No problem," she says. "they won't be very long."
"Excuse me (young woman whose name I can't remember) have you ever been in eleven degrees BELOW zero weather?" Larry asked her.

"No sir I haven't. But I assure you it won't be long." she says.

After a while we finally convinced her, as she sat in her warm little cubicle somewhere in Florida, that spending much time at all in that kind of weather could possibly kill us and the dogs and we were't going to watch a truck pull away with our only protection until another truck arrived.

A very nice man in a very large tow truck showed up about 20 minutes later and said he could take the truck, us and the dogs not problem. He seemed to think of himself not as a tow truck driver but as a tour guide. We learned more about Rock Springs, WY and the surrounding area than we ever thought we'd know. It was interesting and kinda fun!

Chevy foot the bill for the La Quinta hotel in Rock Springs and the local Chevy dealer said they would have the truck ready for us in the morning! We had a nice dinner at Applebee's and they didn't have a problem with us bringing the dogs in. We tried to keep them quiet under the table but they kept peeking out. Some teenage kids double dating thought they were adorable! We even found a mall with a store that sold really warm coats for the dogs! (Picture of them modeling their new winter attire below)

Yep! Life's an adventure! And we thank our lucky stars we get to do this!

THAT SAYS TWENTY-ONE BELOW!!!
THAT'S INSANE!!!!
At least the puppies got new warm coats!
They can pee now!

About Me

My photo
Larry and I decided to retire and hit the road. We bought a new 5th Wheel and new truck to pull it. We packed up the dogs and we're heading out to check off that bucket list. We wake up every morning and "Thank Our Lucky Stars" that we get to do this.
